What is DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic acid, also known as DNA, is a molecule full of
information encoding genetic material used to develop and function all known
living organisms such as plants and animals. DNA, along with RNA and Proteins,
is one of the three macromolecules need in all forms of life.
DNA
has four nucleotides for genetic information; Guanine (G), Adenine (A), Thymine
(T), Cytosine (C). The DNA structure is known as a double helix, having two
long polymers on the sides made of sugars and phosphate.
Within the cells of an organism, the DNA is organized into
chromosomes. Organisms have X and Y chromosomes. Females have two X chromosomes,
while males have one X chromosome and a shorter Y
chromosome.
